Every year, 14th June is celebrated as World
Blood Donor Day by several countries worldwide. By donating blood one can save
a life.Donating blood not only helps someone in need but it is beneficial to the donor too.
What is blood donation and who can donate blood?
If you are healthy and weigh above 50 kgs, you can donate
blood.Several people lose blood in accidents and surgeries.Such people require
blood.When a healthy person donates his blood for such causes,it is known as
blood donation.
A human being has about 5 litres of blood in his body.Oxygen,
nutrients , hormones and other essential food is transported to cells of our
body through blood. Blood provides immunity, regulates body temperature and
helps in blood clotting.
A person can donate blood about 3- 4 times a year.
What happens in blood donation?
About 350 ml of blood is withdrawn from the donor with the
help of surgical needles and other materials. The donated blood is then checked
for its group type, other unhealthy pathogens and other infections.Once
everything is cleared, only then the blood is given to the person in need.
